2021 (At last!) will be our 20th year of doing business as Alberta Prairie Meats.
We started off doing a custom kill and mobile operation with a six-person crew. We soon added retail and wholesale services, with a growing clientele in Calgary. Twenty years. Where has it gone? Add in BSE, COVID-19, and a host of other issues, and it has been a whirlwind. Never dull, and always growing to satisfy customer needs.
2020, even with all its challenges, saw us break new production records. Our production crew now numbering just shy of twenty people, made it possible for us to process over 3000 head of cattle. Our cattle handling facility and the procedures in place, helped us achieve our Animal Welfare Approved status. The proper handling of livestock on site, reflects the final quality of the product we sell.
A few years back we purchased the old Norsemen Metals building next door. This allowed for us to expand operations and give us some breathing room for storage. Our biggest project out of this building was getting into the raw pet food and treats market. This involves processing a multitude of pet treats that are sold in-house, as well as to a distributor out of Calgary for marketing across Canada. We feel responsible in utilizing every possible part of the animal and reducing the amount of waste to rendering and the landfill systems.
Alberta Prairie Meats is owned by Jim and Joanne Johnson. Operations manager is Steve Huard.
