SWIS (Settlement Worker In School) F/T Term

Brooks community? If so, The SPEC Association has a place for you! As a part of the LINKS Newcomer
Services team at SPEC, SWIS staff provides support and services in schools in order to facilitate newcomer
students and families’ settlement and integration in the Brooks community and surrounding areas.
SWIS staff are culturally sensitive and passionate about providing services to newcomer students and their
families. You will assist newcomers to better understand the school system, making the transition to a new
environment as easy as possible, helping them to adjust, adapt and integrate into the Brooks community,
while taking into consideration the language barrier faced in the majority of situations. You will encourage
newcomer students, together with family members, to participate in activities planned in conjunction with
Diploma or degree in a human service area, with at least one year of experience working with children
and families from diverse cultural backgrounds.
RCMP with Vulnerable Sector check (before starting).
Knowledge of settlement/resettlement processes and referral practices
Knowledge of social and emotional needs of immigrant/refugee children and youth in a school setting.
Experience in designing and delivering workshops, group activities, including settlement orientation
Multilingual skills, specifically Oromo, Somali, Amharic and/or Arabic.
The following skills are an asset but not required:
Class 5 Driver’s License and Driver’s Abstract showing three years no fault driving record.
ASIST – Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training
Standard First Aid and CPR
Strong organizational skills
Problem Solving Skills
Friendly, easily establish rapport
Excellent communication and mediation skills
Knowledge of the community and resources available for children and families
Team player with the ability to work collaboratively within a professional network
Knowledge in trauma informed practice and cross-cultural communication skills

The BROOKS COMMUNITY ADULT LEARNING COUNCIL
Is seeking a Creative, Dynamic ESL LINC Instructor
to join our teaching team starting September 1, 2021.
The selected individual will:
Instruct adult students in the 4 competencies, Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing using themed based activities to achieve individual goals.
Create an engaging classroom environment to stimulate learning
Conduct assessments to determine Canadian Benchmark scores based on Portfolio Based Learning.
Ideal candidates should possess a teaching degree with TESEL certification. Competency in the use of Google Classroom, ESL Library and ZOOM is essential.
Consideration will be given to candidates with university degrees or college diploma in related disciplines and with relevant work experience or those currently enrolled in an education degree program.
This is a part-time evening positon for 10 hours per week with the potential for substitution hours during the day.
All teaching staff at BCALC report to the Executive Director, with guidance for programming coordinated by the Program Manager.
